This blog post from 9to5Google announces the availability of Google Workspace Add-ons to Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides. For more information about getting started with Google Workspace, contact Willits Technologies, Inc. today.
What are Google Workspace Add-ons in Docs, Sheets, and Slides?
Google Workspace Add-ons in Docs, Sheets, and Slides let you bring third-party tools directly into the editor you’re already working in. Instead of jumping between separate browser tabs or apps, you can access these tools from a side panel inside your document, spreadsheet, or presentation.
Key points:
- The same Add-ons that have been available in Gmail, Calendar, and Drive are now coming to Docs, Sheets, and Slides.
- The side panel includes a “+” button so you can easily add more integrations.
- You can hide or show the panel at any time from the bottom-right corner of the interface.
This side-by-side experience helps reshape how you manage workflows by keeping your tools and content on the same screen. It’s Google’s way of extending the integrated experience you may already know from Gmail (with Chat, Meet, and Rooms) into the core editor apps.
How do Add-ons improve productivity in Docs, Sheets, and Slides?
Google Workspace Add-ons are designed to streamline everyday tasks by letting you use third-party applications without leaving Docs, Sheets, or Slides.
They help you:
- Reduce context switching: Instead of moving between multiple apps, you can complete tasks like approvals, project updates, or content reviews directly from the side panel.
- Keep work in one place: The same Add-ons you may already use in Drive now appear in the editors, so your workflows stay consistent across Workspace.
- Rethink collaboration: With tools embedded in the document view, teams can coordinate actions (for example, logging tasks or updating records) while they’re editing content.
In short, Add-ons help you reimagine same-screen productivity by bringing the tools you rely on into the exact place where work is created and edited.
Who gets access to the Add-ons side panel and what about Translate?
The Add-ons side panel in Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides is officially rolling out now and will be fully available in the coming weeks to a wide range of customers, including:
- Business tiers: Essentials, Business Starter, Business Standard, Business Plus
- Enterprise tiers: Enterprise Essentials, Enterprise Standard, Enterprise Plus
- Education: Education and Enterprise for Education
- Nonprofits
- Personal Google accounts
Google also previewed a Google Translate widget for the side panel. While it’s not yet available, the demo showed that you’ll be able to:
- Highlight text in a document
- Have it automatically filled into the Translate widget
- Translate it into your desired language for quick output
Once fully rolled out, this will help teams rethink multilingual collaboration by making translation part of the editing experience, rather than a separate step in another tab or tool.
